You can help save the River Doon from destruction…
Please add me to your petition to save the Doon from further water abstraction by Scottish Power.

If Scottish Power get their way, the impact on the local economy will be devastating. The loss of revenue to local businesses and the loss of jobs in an area which is already suffering would be very sad and incredibly shortsighted.

This is not just a fine Salmon river but a wildlife haven. Let us look after what is special about Scotland - people come from all over the world to explore Burns country and the banks of the Doon. Scottish power and the Scottish executive should know better - the lessons are never learnt.

We have been frequent visitors to the area for many years, fishing the river in Dalrymple. It would be a great shame if this little gem was destroyed by a greedy group of individuals and shareholders who put profit before the long term benefits of the people who actually live in the area and who rely on the income that visiting anglers and tourists bring with them. Help stop this.

All rivers are delicate ecosystems; a change in water flow will influence almost all aspects of river and related life. Not only will this plan alter the basic look of the Doon it will have a deverstating effect on some of Scotlands endangered species such as the fresh water mussel. You only have to look at one small aspect of the Doons ecosystem to see how delicate this balance actually is; The freshwater pearl mussels, for example, can live to be over 100 years old. They are a harmless parasite of salmon for their first few months of life after which they drop off settling on the riverbed. Anything that alters the water flow will influence the migrating salmon which, in turn, will influence the 'seeding' of the fresh water mussels. This is just one water flow sensitive relationship - there are many many more... As a Chartered Biologist (Institure of Biology) I am very aware of the long term effects of environmental changes on the delicate and subtle interelationships between species. This short term political plan that is intended to score 'green' ennergy points on one side will devistate a region of natural beauty if it is actioned.

Being born and bred in ayrshire , I have always seen the Doon as an integral part of the the history as well as the fabric of the 'shire whether in the poetry of Burns or the fisherman struggling with a fish or a child playing on the banks and in the countryside which people take for granted at their peril.Even to suggest a serious change in the river flows is endemic of a apathetic public who unless pushed severely by the media will sit and accept blindly. I have seen it in other countries where once beautiful and productive rivers have literally dried up due to man made changes in flow .These changes were thought nothing of, till they actually made the rivers dry up and then people sat up and took notice of the catastrophe by which time, of course , it was too late. The people of Ayrshire must try to protect the natural treasures they have before they lose it. The public voice needs to be mobilised as there are enough bad news stories around just now lets not have one more.

This is such a short-sighted measure and what fundamentally irritates me is that alot of our utilities have been sold abroad where, lets face it, the Spanish holding company will have no interest in what is happening in Ayrshire. Having read what is posted I am minded to ask whether separate improvements can be made, and Scottish Power to pay for them, to allow salmon smelts much easier access via the salmon ladder on the dam. Just remember too what damage Spanish and French sea fishing vessels have done to the sea fisheries around the British Isles - they have no conscience!

I'm coming from a different area than most of the petition posts in this fight. Myself and a few of my pals are keen canoeists who use various stretches of the river up to a few times a month. As well as us, there are many open boaters and kayakers seen on the Doon. This reduction in flow would also finish off our pleasure in using what is a great and quite challenging wee river. It's times like this that fishermen and watersports enthusiasts need to work together in order to keep the river flowing for all. Good luck with the fight, i'm sure you have the backing of all paddlers in Ayrshire.

Fresh water mussels are endangered and Scotland is one of the few remaining strongholds. An extraxt from the Joint Nature Conversation Committee paper is given below. The web site is: http://www.jncc.gov.uk/ProtectedSites/SACselection/species.asp?FeatureIntCode=s1029
Can more be done to obtain backing from conservation bodies to preserve the area? eg SNH (Scottish National Heritage) In addition will the proposal (and application) to increase discahrges from open cast mins in the area lead to a reduced fow being unable to flush out the river and lead to greater siltation.
"Population declines have been caused by factors such as pearl-fishing, pollution, acidification, organic enrichment, siltation, river engineering, and declining salmonid stocks. An additional serious threat in parts of mainland Europe is predation by introduced muskrat Ondatra zibethicus (Zahner-Meike & Hanson 2001). M. margaritifera is now a rare species whose conservation is giving rise to concern, and its increasing rarity in mainland Europe gives extra significance to UK populations."

This country, and its government, cannot, must not, allow such a push for profit to devastate this important, indeed iconic, river. Decision makers, at local and national level, Ayrshire to Holyrood, must act to ensure that this proposed reduction in flow from 45m to 28m gallons never happens thus saving this very important national resource for future generations exactly the way it is now, not spoiled for short term greed and profit by the few. The key to this lies with our government in Edinburgh. Save The Doon!

This action is completely against conservation actuality. Lowering the level on one river and diverting to another will cause severe damage on the "donor" river and the "receiving" river. Stretches of the donor river will have exposed river bed which will take many years to adjust and the reverse is true for the accepting river where banks and pools will get unwanted additions.
The River Doon is at present a famous trout and salmon river and this type of gross interference will create havoc with spawning salmon and the life of the current trout population.
On the ecology front and on the economic front this action will be a death blow to both aspects.
Jim Weatherston
Hugh Gordon
This type of action by our Electricity companies who put shareholders' interests before the interests of local inhabitants and other users of our environment is, sadly, not uncommon. I see parallels with the massive windfarm developments proposed for the Isle-of-Lewis where vast areas were to be devastated and amenities lost in order to profit multi-national companies. Fortunately, at the end of the day common sense prevailed and plans were ditched after a public inquiry. We must pray that a similar result emerges for the Doon (where I still have to connect with a fish!).

Fishing provides an outdoor sporting activity for everyone as well as income to the locality. The prospect of reducing the numbers for quick profit without proper consultation requires challenge. Good luck to you all!

This is not a large river but very much a beautiful river - and, in the style of similar rivers on the west coast of Scotland, full of twists and turns and alive with flora and fauna. I have experienced the joy of catching a fresh run salmon on this river and, following the lead of many others in the sport, returned it to the river in the spirit of conservation of stocks and promotion of the ecology of this fragile eco-system. Alas, that view does not seem to be shared by Iberdrola (Scottish Power). To reduce the water as suggested would make this river no more than a 'wee burn' - destroying its very being, eco-systems and Heritage. And with reference to the Heritage - surely this cannot be allowed to happen - to turn off the Doon in the year of the Homecoming? It is therefore up to each and every one of us to ensure our Parliamentary representatives are made aware of our views. It only takes a moment to email them with your views. So I am lining up with the "Save the Doon" party.

I'm apalled that they are seekeing to extract more water from the loch when the river Doon supports the best salmon fishing in the area and - more to the point - is the natural drain away from the loch. How can they even suggest this? Can they not, for example, think of hithing a generator to the outflow from the dam? Under EU Directives and International obligations(via NASCO),the UK has duties to preserve and enhance its wild Atlantic salmon stocks. The further abstraction of water from the comparatively small catchment area of the Doon would undoubtedly impact on the viability of that river regime to achieve a reasonable target. Yes, it is a spate river, like the Stinchar and so many other smaller Scottish rivers, But, without the NATURAL flows, the ability of such "wee" rivers to maintain and regenerate stocks is heavily compromised. Just ask the biologists. (ends)

I have been fighting to save the headwaters of our North Ayrshire, Renfrewshire and Inverclyde salmon rivers from detrimental and inappropriate industrial development for the last 3 + years with the Save your Regional Park campaign (www.saveyourregionalpark.com). During that time I have been in regular touch with the Ayrshire Rivers Trust attempting to gather their support in objecting to the 10 windfarm proposals within the park which inevitably create severe runoff from the construction of roads, trenches, turbine basis, substations etc. This continues for many years after the construction has finished. So far the Ayrshire Rivers Trust has shown absolutely no interest in supporting the campaign which I find extraordinary.
Regardsless of this, as a keen fisherman, I am delighted to support this campaign to Save the Doon and can only hope that the Ayrshire Rivers Trust support you. Good luck.

I think this proposal needs a serious rethink regarding how one creates an adequate balance between ecology & power. Any further diversion of water is not the answer as indeed has already been made clear by the earlier parliamentary agreement.

No way can we let them take that ammount of water out of the doon. They say they will improve the river ladders for salmon etc but the salmon wont come up the doon if theres not enough water flowing down it in the first place. I grew up in Alloway, next to the last few miles of the Doon before it reaches the sea. I also spent much time up at Loch Doon. Every part of that river is part of me. It's life and history is part of Ayrshire, working Ayrshire, natural Ayrshire, historical Ayrshire, cultural Ayrshire. Changing any part of it would be nothing short of tragedy. It already suffers during dry summers. The footprint that would be left if this goes ahead would be felt at every level, for little gain to anyone.

I grew up in Ayr and swam in the Doon every summer. Why should future generations of kids be deprived of that privilege, or should I say right, just so a power company can make more money. Not to mention the potential economic and environmental ramifications and the effect on the natural beauty of the area. Why don’t Scottish power use more of their profits for researching wave power or other renewable sources that don’t negatively impact people, animals and environment, I’m sure they have plenty to spare.

The Doon is a great Salmon River and it is a wonderful asset to Ayrshire and the West of Scotland. The proposal to reduce flow will mess up this quality fishing. The current compensation flow is required to fish the river properly and guarantees good fly fishing conditions and allows all legal methods to be fished at all times throughout the season. The proposed reduction in flow will prevent and not allow the river to be fished. I am a visiting angler who brings his whole family to the area we stay B&B and also rent Holiday Accommodation + spend plenty in the local economy. The proposed change to flow rates will force me to look elsewhere for my fishing and Family Holiday.
How may more folks will take my view and look elsewhere. The answer is that it will be the vast majority of anglers who currently fish the Doon.
The river and its ecology is currently not broken so Scottish Power please leave the Doon well alone.

I fish the lovely River Doon which has been revitalised over recent years by the great personal efforts of locals like David Cosh and others. This blatant community, economic and leisure vandalism proposed by Scottish Power and their Spanish absentee landlords MUST AND WILL BE STOPPED. It is easy to sit all day in gleaming ivory-tower corporate headquarters looking at global financial figures but those directors who see the wider picture should exercise their Corporate Responsibilities and get out to meet local people and businesses and see for themselves what their narrow-focussed engineers are proposing to destroy AND PUT A STOP TO IT NOW !! All customers of Scottish Power in their home or business should send an E Mail to the following 3 people giving them the www.savethedoon.com weblink and saying they will change their supplier to a competitor if this Scottish Power proposal goes any further :

As I understand it, River Basin Management Planning will become a statutory obligation by the end of the year under a European Directive. Under such arrangements, one river should not be improved at the expense of another which seems to be the most likely outcome of Scottish Power's proposal . The children of Dalmellington Primary School have invested their time and a great deal of effort to care for the health of the river, by cleaning up tributary streams and releasing hatched Salmon twice already. They plan to hatch and release salmon alevin again in 2010 in association with Ayr Rivers Trust. They built a bird watching hide on the Bogton Loch, which had it's opening celebrated in June 2009. What message does the abstraction of the water from the Doon give to these children who are being encouraged to care for their environment to have it jeopardised by ill considered foreign business? This will affect the financial wellbeing of the area, with repercussions on tourism, farming. The well being of an area of considerable beauty which has had its resources, its employment and the health of its inhabitants, put at risk through hardship associated with mining.
The Doon is enjoyed by inhabitants and visitors with the River Doon being at the very heart of many activities enjoyed in the area.An area famous for its attractive, magical, picturesque river.

The area needs someone to come and bring some good news for a change. We have been robbed of our resources for years which have been the mainstay of the Ayrshire economy but still get looked on, especially by people from |Ayr, as some sort of second class citizens. Our politicians, if you could call them that, have never ever been interested in trying to improve things or even bother to listen to any type of suggestion which could help to create work in the Doon Valley.

The River Doon is surrounded by beautiful land which should not be destroyed by further disrupting it's flow of water. Scotland gets enough rain and it should be possible to 'trap' some of this water to meet the needs of the corporate giants.
Jimmy Gibb
Scotland's rural economy should be nurtured and reshaped with great care.
Taking onto account past mistakes, some irretrievable, and the needs of Scottish people to preserve small businesses which are the heart of Scottish economy.
While green power is to be commended and if produced in Scotland can only be of benefit when the people of Scotland have more of a say in deciding our future. May be now is the time for Scottish Government to invest and nurture local companies installing micro water turbines on the same principal as wind turbines. Far to much of Scottish money is landing up in the hands of multi-nationals, including supermarkets, where large profits are taken out of Scotland and not reinvested at source. This proposal to divert the water from Loch Doon is no different and should be seriously rethought with predominantly Scottish based business in mind.
Yours, a very frustrated business man operating in Ayrshire.

Many years ago My granfather and memeber of his family fished in the Doon for pearls. How many rivers in Ayrshire support pearl fishing? I still have many happy memories of bein taken there with my grandfather and both my daughters have rings with Doon pearls now a very rare item. To divert any water would be a would be a major disaster, there are very few natural beauty spots left in this part of Scotland and we do not want to destroy any more.

Multi Nationals should remember Tourism is our Industry - they should be thinking for the next 100 years and build new catchment facilities, not rape the Doon. Once they have made the riverbeds dry they have no plan B.

I am quite sure the Bard - Burns - would have a fit if he knew the truth about this destruction of a beautiful and historically important river such as the Doon. I would say that whatever financial benefits are made from this proposed project cannot measure the impact on the hundreds of species of wildlife, the salmon and otters that frequent the river. Let Scottish Power find other ways to get water. Enough of it falls from the skies.
richard crooks
Being involved with Auchinleck Community Development Initiative (ACDI) I fully support your argument. This is about greed and company profits. Their lack of concern about the consequences of such a project beggers belief. I am not against 'Green Projects' far from it what I do object to is upsetting the balance of nature. ACDI is commited to environmental improvement, local enterprise which will create jobs and income for the community. As a group we back you all the way. Richard Crooks director ACDI

As a young man my father (born and brought up in Patna) fished the River Doon and told great stories of wonderful fishing and he spent hours and hours on the river. Now that the river is improving following a great deal of good work it must be protected at all costs. All to often we have seen great rivers spoiled by Hydro Electric Scmes and as there are now better alternatives (wind and wave power) it is time t leave our slamon rivers alone! Loss of amenity cannot be compensated by an extra bit of hydro. There are so many other hydro sites that can be developed. The Ness Glen is a superb and unique environment.
